Commentary
And when he ﷺ had informed the believers of his vision that he would circumambulate the Sacred Kaaba, and it was difficult for him to perform Umrah in the year of Hudaybiyyah, he ﷺ set out and with him were a thousand and five hundred of his companions. They were certain that they would perform Umrah in front of him. That settled in their hearts and their hearts absorbed it. Thus, removing it from them became the most difficult thing possible. The polytheists approached them after his she-camel had knelt, and he ﷺ made peace with them to return from them that year and to perform Umrah at a similar time the following year. This was - or even less than it - a shaking of belief and a cause for the whispering of Satan in religion. There had been something similar in the Night Journey, and he ﷺ had not informed them of what would imply something in his matter, so many people turned back because of it. Allah, the Exalted, said, indicating victory by affirming the believers in this difficult situation, to show the fullness of His power and subtle wisdom: (p-284) 'He' means: alone 'is the One who sent down' on the day of Hudaybiyyah 'tranquility' meaning: steadfastness in religion 'into the hearts of the believers' meaning: those firmly rooted in faith, and they are the people of Hudaybiyyah after they were overwhelmed by what could disturb souls and lead hearts astray from the rejection of the disbelievers and the return of the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, without achieving their goal. No one among them turned back from faith after the people surged and were shaken, even Umar, may Allah be pleased with him - although he is the one who distinguishes truth from falsehood and is described in previous books as a pillar of iron - what then is the assumption about others in the turmoil of their souls and the shaking of their hearts? And for the truthful one, may Allah be pleased with him, there was from his firm footing and deep roots what was known about him, may Allah be pleased with him, that he could not be surpassed. Then Allah affirmed them all. Al-Razi said: And tranquility is trust in Allah's promise, and patience in Allah's decree. Rather, tranquility here is defined by a gathering of victory, strength, and spirit, to which the fearful turns and the sad finds solace. The effect of this tranquility is dignity, humility, and the appearance of determination in matters. This is the end. And everyone who is firmly rooted in faith has a share in this verse; it is reaped by the close ones.
And when he informed them of what no one else could do, he explained it by saying: 'So that they may increase' meaning: by believing the Messenger when he told them that they would surely enter Makkah and circumambulate the ancient house. Allah cleared them of doubt by reminding them that he did not say to them: 'They will enter this year' 'in faith' in this belief in the unseen that their peace with the disbelievers and their return without reaching their goal is the very opening for the arrangement of the peace treaty and the arrangement of the spread of Islam based on the peace treaty, as existence revealed after that, for them to measure other matters against it 'with their firm faith' established before this incident. Al-Qushayri, may Allah have mercy on him, said: With the rising of the moons of certainty upon the stars of knowledge of certainty, then with the rising of the sun of truth of certainty upon the full moon of the eye of certainty.
And when it was that perhaps a wretched one thought that taking matters gradually was something in ability, he said: ﴿And to Allah﴾ meaning: the One who sent down tranquility upon them so that their victory in this Umrah would be with strength. Then it would be soon by action and condition that it is solely for Him ﴿The forces of the heavens and the earth﴾ meaning: all of them, and among them is tranquility. He manages them with His subtle craftsmanship and wondrous planning. If He had willed, He would have aided the believers now by action, and destroyed their enemies with forces from His forces or without cause. However, He did that so that the victory would be with you, so that your matter would be elevated and your reward would be great, and the truthful in his support would be distinguished from the liar. For indeed, the abode is the abode of trial, and the establishment of causes upon the causes is mostly where wisdom lies, not coercion and the appearance of the word. His hidden name is the apparent in this abode. Therefore, you see that the causes are concealed by their causes, and no one knows the realities except the discerning. Do you not see that when this Surah was revealed to him ﷺ and he recited it to them, some of the companions, may Allah be pleased with them all, said: O Messenger of Allah, is this a victory? Some of them said: They have prevented us from the House and have prevented our sacrificial animals. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "This is a terrible statement. Rather, it is the greatest victory. Are you not pleased that you strike them in their land and they repel you from it with ease and ask you for safety, and they desire from you security? They have seen from you what they disliked, and Allah has granted you victory over them and returned you safe and rewarded. This is the greatest of victories. Have you forgotten the Day of Uhud when you were ascending and did not turn to anyone while I was calling you from your rear? Have you forgotten the Day of the Confederates when they came to you from above you and from below you, and when the eyes had swerved and the hearts reached the throats, and you thought of Allah thoughts?" The Muslims said: Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth; it is indeed the greatest of victories. By Allah, O Prophet of Allah, we did not think about what you thought about, for you know better about Allah and His command than we do. And Allah sent down confirmation of the matter of the vision for those who were confused about its condition: ﴿Indeed, Allah has fulfilled His Messenger's vision with truth; you will surely enter the Sacred Mosque﴾ [Al-Fath: 27] the verse. So all these matters, as you see, return to the hidden with amazement in the veils of causes. No one sees them except the possessors of precision in contemplating the wisdom of Allah, glorified and exalted is He.
And when the foundation of all that has passed was based on power through hidden matters, from which weakness appears, unlike what time has revealed of strength, and the completion of power was dependent on the comprehensiveness of knowledge, Allah, the Most High, said: "And Allah" meaning: the greatest King, eternally and forever, "is Knowing" of essences and meanings, "Wise" in perfecting what He creates. So He turned them away from this pilgrimage after He arranged the matter of reconciliation so that people would be safe and some would mingle with others. For He knew that no one with a sound mind would hear the Qur'an and see what its people were steadfast in and the hatred of what they were in of following their forefathers except that he would hasten to follow and enter into the religion with desire. And He, glorified is He, included Khuzā'ah in the peace of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and Banu Bakr, who are their enemies, in the peace of Quraysh so that they would seek to harm them. Quraysh would assist them in the peace after the soldiers of Allah had increased and the supporters of the religion had become strong. So Allah would open through them the honored Mecca, and the banners of the religion would be raised, and the flags of clear victory would flutter, and people would enter into the religion in crowds, and the religion of Islam would prevail over all religions.
