Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, made them happy with what He promised them regarding the matter being a victory and from the spoils of Khaybar, He followed that good news by indicating that they have no hope of possessing it or obtaining it without His assistance. He said: ﴿And others﴾ meaning: and He promised you many spoils other than this, and Allah knows best, which are the spoils of Hawazin that have not been comparable to it before. And when it was in His knowledge, glorified and exalted is He, that the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, are affirming it except for one who, by custom, cannot defeat them to obtain the spoils, what was in His knowledge, exalted is He, for its certainty was like that which occurred and passed. He, exalted is He, said: ﴿You could not﴾ meaning: by what you knew of your inability ﴿to attain it﴾. And when the listener anticipated, after knowing their inability regarding it, the news about the reason leading to taking it by what was established with those who believed in the promise of it, He began with the letter of expectation: ﴿Indeed, Allah has encompassed﴾ meaning: the One who encompasses all things with knowledge and power ﴿it﴾. So it was like that which was surrounded by a barrier preventing anything from overcoming it from your possession or for others to be able to take anything from it. And for that reason, and for the sake of generality, He concluded the verse with His saying: ﴿And Allah﴾ meaning: the One who encompasses all attributes of perfection eternally and forever ﴿is capable of all things﴾ from it and from others ﴿powerful﴾ in full power; because He is knowledgeable of all things.
