Commentary
And when He promised the obedient and warned the disobedient, and the souls were more inclined to the promise, He indicated it with a great reward from Him, a tangible matter whose attraction is great for the souls that are limited in their ability to penetrate the unseen world. He said, confirming that the greatest intention behind it is the wavering ones, beginning with 'Indeed'; for the context necessitates the expectation of what has occurred from the divine tradition that when it incites desire for something, it indicates it with a witnessed matter that brings near the promised absent: 'Indeed, Allah is pleased' meaning: He who has majesty and beauty 'with the believers' meaning: those firmly established in faith, that is: He acted with them as one who is pleased with what He has granted them of victory and what He has decreed for them of reward. And this implies that He was not pleased with the disbelievers, so He forsook them in this world along with what He has prepared for them in the Hereafter. The verses confirm what has been mentioned regarding the recompense of the two groups with observable matters.
And when He mentioned pleasure, He mentioned its timing to indicate its cause, saying: 'When', meaning: at the time, and He depicted their state, informing that it is a delightful and impressive matter, firmly established in pleasure, saying: 'They pledge allegiance to you' during the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah when the polytheists prevented access to the House. So you sent Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, to them to inform them that you did not come for fighting but rather for Umrah. Then it reached you that they killed him, so you called for the pledge to confront them, and every one who was with you pledged allegiance on the condition that they would not flee to confront the people. And the matter was further clarified and specified in favor of the people of the pledge by His saying: 'Under the tree', and the 'lam' is for the mental reference. And it was a tree in the place where the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, was stationed in Hudaybiyyah. And for this reason, it was called the Pledge of Ridwan. Al-Baghawi narrated through Al-Thalabi from Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'No one who pledged allegiance under the tree will enter the Fire.'
And when it indicated their sincerity by what He described them with, He caused His saying: ﴿So He knew﴾, meaning: for what He has of encompassing knowledge ﴿what is in their hearts﴾, meaning: of its conformity to what they said with their tongues in the pledge, and that what occurred to some of them of confusion in accepting the peace and their sadness about it is only due to the love of Allah and His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, and their preference for what He intends of elevating His religion and manifesting it, not out of doubt in the religion. And this knowledge caused a motivation [for] such a matter concerning them, His saying: ﴿So He sent down tranquility﴾, meaning: with the steadfastness of hearts and their reassurance in every situation that pleases Allah and His Messenger. And it indicated its greatness in that it overcomes fear, even if it is immense, by His saying: ﴿Upon them﴾. Thus, it affected that they did not fear the consequences of fighting when they were called to it, even though they were in the multitude of disbelievers like a white hair in the side of a black bull, with no effect of the peace in what appears in it of weakness and other illusions of deficiency in their hearts in that difficult situation and the constricted places, except when they saw the truthfulness of the resolve of the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, and his matter proceeded in that with what he does and says.
And when He mentioned from Him, glorified and exalted is He, what is the foundation that is not built except upon it, He followed it with its effects and said: ﴿And He rewarded them﴾, meaning: He gave them a reward for what He granted them of obedience and tranquility in it as a reward, turning towards them, filling the places of their needs. He is worthy to be sought by a person and to be frequented in seeking Him for what He has of acceptance, ability, and comprehensiveness. ﴿A victory﴾ by what He, glorified and exalted is He, established of the peace resulting from the incapacitation of Quraysh from fighting ﴿Soon﴾ by leaving the fighting that is obligatory after their rest and strength and their gathering due to the mingling of some people with others, so that one who was distant from the religion enters into it for what he sees of its beauties. Thus, the greatest victory will be the victory of the honored Mecca, which is the cause of the opening of all lands.
