Commentary
And when he turned away from their assumption that their lies would be hidden from him by a general matter, and he presented it because it is more beneficial due to its comprehensiveness, he followed it by turning away from the content of their words and said: "Rather" meaning: your failure to engage in what you informed about, concerning being preoccupied with family and wealth, "you thought" while you are standing with the apparent assumptions, you have no access to the innermost thoughts. And he indicated the certainty of their assumption based on their claim by saying: "that it will not turn back." And when the speech was regarding what concerns the Messenger about the mission and the journey, he indicated that whoever sends a messenger to something while he is unable to support him to convey that thing to the goal he intended from it is incapable of what he wants: "the Messenger." And he magnified the followers by saying: "and the believers," expressing what is appropriate for them from the description that implies steadfastness, and he made clear the emphasis of that among them by His saying, the Most High: "to their families forever," meaning: due to what is in your hearts of the greatness of the polytheists and the insignificance of the believers, that led you to say: they are in Quraysh only eaters of heads.
And when it was known that this is evil, he stated it in a way that encompasses others by saying: "and you thought" meaning: by that and other things that result from it, from the manifestation of disbelief and what branches from it, "the thought of evil," meaning: that which left nothing from what is hated to the utmost degree of hatred except that it encompassed it. And when all of his affairs were uncovered, like the uncovering of its trace, he said: "and you were" meaning: in regard to your gathering from where it is a gathering in our knowledge before that by what we created you upon and what the state has revealed about it for those who have insight, "a people" meaning: with your strength regarding what you attempt, "ruined" meaning: in the utmost destruction, decay, and corruption, and lack of good; because you were created upon that corruption, so there is no escape for them from it. And this is as has been previously mentioned regarding the gathering from where it is a gathering, not in relation to each individual; for indeed, he has purified many of them after that, and they remained steadfast and did not turn back.
