Commentary
And when all that has preceded of encouraging the sincere and warning the hesitant and the falsifier towards sincerity has been established, and it has been called to that along with the clarification that there is no original purpose, but rather it is mercy, kindness, and goodness, he produced his saying calling out to whoever needed the call from the type of distance due to their need for that and their failure to initiate it before: "O you who have believed," meaning: they acknowledged with their tongues, "Obey Allah," meaning: the greatest King, affirming your claims of obedience to Him with great diligence in it that it is sincere. And he honored the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, by singling him out, for He, glorified and exalted is He, said: "And obey the Messenger," because obedience to him is from the obedience of the One who sent him. So if you do that, you will affirm yourselves and your deeds as was mentioned at the beginning of the Surah, and they will be correct by being based on obedience through correcting intentions and purifying them along with goodness for the outward form, so that the action is complete in form and spirit.
And when obedience may be carried upon establishing the outward form, he said, alerting to sincerity so that it may be complete in sense and meaning: "And do not invalidate your deeds," meaning: by disobeying them. For indeed, righteous deeds, if intended for what does not please them by seeking, even if they are at the peak of good appearance, they become a form without meaning. Thus, they are among what becomes scattered dust, like what those who display faith while concealing opposition with hypocrisy, showing off, arrogance, pride, and harm, and similar sins have done. However, the context with its connection indicates that disbelief is the greatest intended by that. And the verse [is from the interweaving]: it mentioned obedience first as evidence of disobedience second, and invalidation second as evidence of correctness first. And its secret is that He commanded with the principle of happiness and prohibited the end of corruption second; for it is greater in prohibiting corruption due to the ugliness of its appearance and the exposure of its secret.
