Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed that He would make them known to His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, He followed this information by stating that He would also make them known to all the believers. He said, confirming for their assumption that they possess a strong disposition and sound intellect by which they conceal their matters: "And We will surely test you." That is, We will treat you as one who is tested by mixing with you what We have of attributes of greatness through severe commands upon the souls and disliked prohibitions to them and calamities, a mixture that inclines and transforms. Thus, the decree is in the two actions that follow in the reading of the congregation with the letter 'noon', following the first style. In the reading of Abu Bakr from Asim with the letter 'yaa', the pronoun refers to Allah, the Most High, who encompasses the attributes of greatness related to subjugation and other attributes of honor leading to grace. So, it is in complete agreement with the reading of 'noon' "until We know" through the trial, knowledge that is witnessed by others, corresponding to what we previously knew as unseen knowledge. Thus, We extract from your innermost secrets what We have formed in you [and molded you upon] that which no one among you knows, nor do you truly know it. "The fighters among you" in combat and [in] other deeds and hardships and terrors, in compliance with the command to do so.
And when the foundation of jihad is patience in facing hardships, He said, emphasizing His command: "And the patient." That is, in the hardships of jihad and other adversities. Al-Qushayri said: Through trial and testing, the true qualities of men become apparent. The sincere emerges, the hypocrite is revealed, and the true nature is clarified. And when He established a criterion for knowledge of the essences, He followed it with a measure for knowledge of the righteous. He said, adding to "We know" in the reading of the congregation and to "We will test" in the reading from Ya'qub with the waaw being silent: "And We will test your news." That is, We will mix it by appointing someone to distort it, making its goodness appear bad and its badness appear good, so that it becomes evident to the people who works for Allah and who works for the devil. For indeed, the one who works for Allah, when he names his badness with the name of goodness, it is known that this is a kindness from Allah to him, so he feels shy before Him and returns to Him. And if he names his goodness with the name of badness and it becomes well-known, it is known that this is a grace from Allah upon him so that he does not fall into arrogance or be attacked by showing off, thus increasing his goodness. The one who works for the devil increases in wickedness; for his fame among the people is his primary concern, and he turns away from goodness because it did not lead him to what he desired from the praise of the people about him through the news and did not affirm it with us. In the reading of Ya'qub, there is an indication that the transformation of the state of the informant after the appearance of his news is easier than his transformation before its appearance. And from Al-Fudayl, it is reported that when he recited this verse, he wept and said: O Allah, do not test us; for if You test us, You will expose our secrets and disgrace us.
