3That is because the disbelievers have followed falsehood, while the believers have followed the truth (that has come) from their Lord. This is how Allah explains their (respective) situations to the people.

Commentary

And when the recompense is of the same kind as the action, he explained what preceded of his actions regarding the two groups by saying: ﴿That﴾ meaning: the great matter that was mentioned here regarding the recompense of the two groups ﴿is because﴾ meaning: due to the fact that ﴿those who disbelieved﴾ meaning: concealed the realities of their minds ﴿followed﴾ meaning: with all their effort and their endeavor for what their original natures led them to ﴿the falsehood﴾ of the action that has no reality [to it] in the external world that corresponds to it, and that is innovation and inclination with desires, favoring the pleasures, so they went astray. ﴿And those who believed﴾ meaning: even if they were in the lowest degrees of faith ﴿followed﴾ (p-200) meaning: with all their effort, following what the original nature calls to, opposing the inclinations of desires and the calls of pleasures despite their abundance and strength ﴿the truth﴾ meaning: that which has a reality that corresponds to it, and that is wisdom, which is acting in accordance with knowledge, and it is the knowledge of the known as it [truly] is ﴿from their Lord﴾ who has done good to them by creating them and what He caused from their good belief, so they were guided.

And when it became clear from this that the inner state of those who disbelieved is falsehood, and the inner state of those who believed is truth, and it was previously established in Al-Baqarah that the example is what is obtained in the inner perception from the realities of the tangible things, so it is subtler than the tangible thing, and that is the aspect of similarity, it became known that the example of each of the two groups is what is known from their inner state. So the example of the first is falsehood and the example of the second is truth; for this reason, He said, glorified is He, as a continuation in response to one who might say due to what he perceived from the astonishment of the mind at what he was struck by from the greatness of this saying: Is there [an example] like this: ﴿Thus﴾ meaning: like this great matter of significance ﴿Allah sets forth﴾ [meaning] He who encompasses all attributes of perfection ﴿for the people﴾ meaning: everyone who has the power of disturbance and movement ﴿their examples﴾ meaning: the examples of themselves and the examples of (p-201) the two preceding groups or the examples of all things that they need to clarify their examples, clarifying for them like this clarification so that each one of them may receive the recompense of their state. It has become known from this example that whoever follows falsehood, Allah has misled his actions and increased his sins and corrupted his mind, and whoever follows the truth acts according to it, regardless of who he is, and this is the ultimate encouragement to seek knowledge in the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, and to act upon them.
