And when He, glorified and exalted is He, created them, their betrayal did not affect Him in the ugliest of forms. It became clear that nothing drove them to what they did except their ignorance and foolishness. So, He produced their humiliation by reproach, saying, in addition to what He decrees: 'Did they not know when they said what angers us that We know their secret and their whisperings? And indeed, Our power encompasses them so that they have settled in themselves that We will reveal to the people what they conceal and take them with a severe taking, making them the most ignorant of the ignorant.' Did they think, due to the weakness of their minds—by what the expression of 'the reckoning' made clear—that this was the original state? But He expressed what indicated the affliction that led them to that, saying, exalted and mighty is He: 'Do those in whose hearts is a disease think...' which, if it corrupts, all their bodies will corrupt. 'A disease' means: an affliction for which there is no remedy. The reckoning is in the utmost firmness, as indicated by the emphasis in His saying, glorified and exalted is He: 'that Allah will not bring forth...' meaning: He will not manifest one who is encompassing in attributes of perfection for the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, and the believers, may Allah be pleased with them, in a manner of renewal and continuity. 'Their grudges' means: their inclination and what they conceal within the depths of their hearts from their crookedness, which indicates their grudges. It is that they are concealing enmity in their hearts, persisting in it, waiting for opportunities to seize it. The matter is not as they imagined; rather, Allah exposes them and uncovers their deception.
