Commentary
And when the denial of blessings necessitates, along with the permissibility of blessings, the nullification of what has preceded from the service, He said: "That" meaning: the great matter of the humiliation from [the actions of] Our messengers [with them] "by them following" meaning: they dealt with their original nature in that they followed out of stubbornness from them "what angered Allah" meaning: the greatest King, which is acting with His disobedience by allying with His enemies and opposing His allies and other than that.
And when the act of what angers may occur with the neglect of the fact that it angers, He clarified that they are not like that, so He said, the Exalted: "And they hated" meaning: by associating partners "His pleasure" by their hatred [the greatest] of the causes of His pleasure, which is faith. They are more averse to anything less than that by refraining from all acts of obedience, because that is manifestly clear in that it is angering, so its doer is not excused in neglecting to consider it. "So He nullified" meaning: for that reason, it caused that He corrupted "their righteous deeds" and He rendered them void to the extent that they had no weight at all due to the neglect of the foundation of noble morals, such as honoring guests, supporting the weak, charity, freeing slaves, and other forms of kindness.
