And when he clarified the devil's control over them, he explained its cause and said: ﴿That﴾ meaning: the matter that is far from good and what is indicated by clear reason ﴿is that they﴾ meaning: because these who have turned away ﴿said to those who disliked what﴾ meaning: all that ﴿Allah has revealed﴾ meaning: the Greatest King, gradually according to the occurrences, revealing in it the miracle of creation in the eloquence of the composition along with the fluency of the vocabulary and its strength with ease in pronunciation and sweetness in hearing, and its suitability to nature, as every person of taste, whether of the foolish or the wise, testifies to it despite their differences in levels of foolishness and intelligence. And another miracle for them in the gravity of the meaning and its wisdom, and a third in its correspondence to the situation that necessitated its revelation, a correspondence that creation is unable to bring forth anything like it. And a fourth in its arrangement with what has been revealed before it from the verses, not according to the order of revelation, but according to what wisdom necessitated, which thoughts diminish before it, and which turn away, humbled by its majesty, from the backs, insights of those with sight. And those to whom this speech is directed are - and Allah knows best - the ones who openly declare disbelief. They said to them after these evidences of miracles, and what preceded them from the clear and evident verses: ﴿We will obey you﴾ with a truthful promise that has no contradiction in it ﴿in some of the matter﴾ and that is the fighting in the cause of Allah, which has been previously mentioned that they, upon the revelation of a surah in which it is mentioned, will become like one who is overwhelmed by death, [So you are safe] from us fighting you ever; for we have only embraced Islam for the safety of our blood and our wealth, and what we love from what is revealed is the assurance for whoever acknowledges the word of Islam and the acceptance of it outwardly and the general promise of ease in the land and expansion in provisions and so forth. So they were thus disbelievers; for religion does not divide. Whoever neglects any of its fundamentals has lost all of it, and the restriction to some implies that they will not obey them in the other part, which is the manifestation of Islam and the conception in the form of peace. And all of this is because Allah, the Exalted, has created them with a disposition prepared for such a thing. So when they said it, neglecting what He has bestowed upon them of the instinct of reason, they deserved, in the course of our customs for their choice of obedience to the enemy - while being unaware of the consequences - to be forsaken and to be made to prevail over them, so that their taking in appearance is from those who obeyed him inwardly. And if they had held firmly to their religion and were united with its people against others, no enemy would have been able to overpower them, nor would any calamity they disliked have approached them with evil.

And when it was the case that anyone with the slightest intellect does not betray except when he thinks that his betrayal is hidden so that he may be safe from its consequences, he depicted the ugliness of what they have committed and said: "And Allah" meaning: they said that while the greatest King, who encompasses all things in knowledge and power, "knows" throughout the passage of time "their secrets" meaning: all of it, this which he has revealed to them and other things from what is in their hearts that have not appeared on their tongues.
