Commentary
And when he mentioned what they are upon and condemned them with the most disgraceful mention, he mentioned those whom Allah had given knowledge and said: "And those who were guided," meaning they exerted themselves by listening to you in responding to the call of the original nature to attain guidance through sincerity in faith, submission, and compliance with various forms of striving. "He increased them," meaning: Allah, who has sealed the hearts of the ignorant, "guidance" by having opened their chests and illuminated them with the lights of witnessing, so they became vessels for wisdom. "Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds, their Lord will guide them by their faith." "And He granted them their piety," meaning: He made clear to them what is worthy of being avoided and granted them success in staying away from it, in opposition to desires. They are the first category of the verse that introduces the parable: "Those who are upon clear evidence from their Lord." The meaning of the addition is that He gave each of them from it according to what their condition necessitates. Ibn Burjan said: Piety is the work of faith just as the actions of the limbs are the work of Islam. The end.
