Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, promised that He would support whoever supports Him because He is their protector and would admit them into His abode of blessings, and He would forsake whoever opposes Him because He has made them His enemies until He admits them into His abode of misery, the decree was a proof of that: So how many a people weaker than those who followed you We have supported against those who denied them, so there is no forsaker for them. Then He turned to His saying: ﴾And how many﴿. And when the strength of Quraysh was indeed in their land, and the reference to them was more indicative of the collusion of its people and the intensity of their agreement until they were as if they were one entity, He said: ﴾From a town﴿ meaning: denied its messenger. ﴾It is stronger﴿ and has more numbers ﴾than your town﴿. And when this was revealed after the migration, He specified and said: ﴾Which expelled you﴿ meaning: its people expelled you, agreeing in the reasons for the expulsion from various forms of harm upon one word, until their hearts were as one heart, so it was as if it was they who expelled you - and it is Mecca - they denied you and harmed you until We brought you out from among them to support you against them with whom We supported you from this town of yours which sheltered you from the supporters, a support flowing according to what you are accustomed to and familiar with. ﴾We destroyed them﴿ with the punishment of annihilation as our greatness required, and He narrated their past condition with His saying: ﴾So there is no supporter for them﴿.
