Commentary
And when He made clear that He elevates His allies and humiliates His enemies, He clarified His reason by saying: ﴿That﴾ meaning: the great matter that He did with the two groups ﴿is because Allah﴾ meaning: due to the fact that the Greatest King, who encompasses the attributes of perfection, ﴿is the ally of those who believe﴾ meaning: is close to the believers who affirm Him and are pleased with Him. He acts with them according to what He possesses of majesty and beauty, as a close one acts with his beloved close one. Al-Qushayri said: It is correct to say: This verse is the most hopeful verse in the Book of Allah; because it did not mention the ascetics, the worshippers, and the people of devotions and striving. Rather, it mentioned the lowest ranks of the people of faith.
﴿And that the disbelievers﴾ meaning: those who are deeply entrenched in this description ﴿have no ally for them﴾ in this sense; because they are far from Allah, who is truly worshipped only by Him. So, the closeness of a close one does not benefit them at all. And indeed, Allah is their master in a different sense, but in the sense that He is their lord and owner. And therein is an indication that He, glorified and exalted is He, is the ally of one who is not deeply entrenched in disbelief, and He brings him out from darkness into light.
