And when he clarified that they are in the utmost foolishness in the worship of that which has no evidence whatsoever for its worship, he followed it by clarifying that they are in the utmost ignorance by denying that which is clearer than anything else. So he said, following: "And those who disbelieved are turning away from what they were warned of" [Al-Ahqaf: 3]. "And when Our verses are recited to them," meaning: they are read by any reader in the manner of continuity, "upon them are Our clear signs," meaning: which are greater than them in themselves and by being added to us, "clear signs," there is nothing clearer than them. They said - this was the original, but he clarified the description that led them to speak, so he said: "The disbelievers said," meaning: they concealed those lights which that recitation brought forth for them - this was the original, but he said: "for the truth," meaning: for its sake, "when" meaning: at the time "it came to them," its clarification, for with its clarification there is nothing more established than it, and they hastened, upon their first hearing of it, to deny it without any contemplation: "This," meaning: that which was recited, "is magic," meaning: an illusion that has no reality to it, "clear," meaning: evident in that it is an illusion. Their saying this - by their hastening to it without any reflection at all, and by it being the farthest of things from the reality of what was said about it - indicates that they are the most stubborn of people and the boldest in lying, while they claim that they are the most deeply rooted among people in fairness and the most committed to truth.
