Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, designated the Day of Resurrection, I understand that they will respond to them therein. He clarified what they will argue with them at that time, saying: "And when the people are gathered," meaning: they are gathered against their will in the easiest and simplest manner. "The people," meaning: everyone who is capable of movement on the Day of Resurrection. "They were," meaning: those who are called. "For them," meaning: for the callers. "Enemies," and Allah will give them the power of speech, so they will address them with everything that an enemy addresses his enemy. "And they were," meaning: those who were worshipped. "By their worship of them," meaning: the callers, and they are the polytheists - them. "Disbelievers," because they were heedless of it, as He, glorified and exalted is He, said in Surah Yunus, blessings and peace be upon him: "And their partners will say, 'You were not worshipping us.'" [Yunus: 28]
