And when He, glorified and exalted is He, invalidated their saying about the idols by showing their inability to bring about anything of that, because they are among the creations in essence, He followed this invalidation with the fact that they have no knowledge, so it is known for certain that they are the most misguided of people, as they have linked the most noble of matters - which is the foundations of religion - to that which there is no evidence for at all. So He, exalted is He, said, denying that anyone is more misguided than them, and following what the context necessarily leads to in its estimation, which is: So who is more misguided than one who claims something of the matters, even if it is little, without evidence: ﴿And who is more misguided than one who﴾ claims the greatest of matters without any evidence, neither rational nor transmitted? For he is ﴿calling﴾ upon that which has no power or knowledge. And when his power and knowledge have ceased, his worship is not valid according to the obviousness of reason. And He guided to its lowliness by His saying, exalted is He: ﴿besides Allah﴾ meaning: of the lowest rank [of ranks] of that which has all the attributes of majesty, beauty, and perfection. For He, glorified is He, knows everything and has power over everything, such that He answers the supplication, removes the affliction, and fulfills the hope when He wills, and He manages His servant according to what He knows of his secret and public matters by that which he cannot manage himself [with]. And the servant desires in many matters that if he were entrusted [to himself] in it and his request were answered, it would lead to his destruction. So He, glorified is He, manages him with that which He greatly dislikes for him, and the situation reveals that he would have no relief except in it ﴿from one who does not respond to him﴾ meaning: does not bring about the response and does not seek to bring it about from the idols and others, because they have no qualification for that.

And when the least of responses is absolute speech, and they, in the Hereafter, will speak to them in general, even if it is with that which harms them, this denial is at a time when no response will benefit at all, nor will anyone suffice for anyone forever. So He, exalted is He, said: ﴿until the Day of Resurrection﴾ meaning: that which We have provided for them from its evidences is clearer than the sun, and it does not increase them in anything except denial and leaning towards that which has no evidence at all, while they claim guidance and severely criticize misguidance. And when the one who does not respond may have [knowledge] of the obedience of the human to him, hoping for his response one day, He negated this with His saying, adding to their blame in calling upon that which has no hope in benefiting them: ﴿and they are heedless of their supplication﴾ meaning: the supplication of the polytheists to them ﴿they are heedless﴾ meaning: this description is established for them, they do not know who calls upon them nor who does not call upon them. And He expressed with heedlessness, which is one of the attributes of the rational for the inanimate, emphasizing if what is meant is broader than the idols and others whom they worship from the rational beings of humans, jinn, and others, and as a characterization if what is meant is the idols specifically, or in mockery as if it were said: they are scholars, for you are of a higher status than to worship that which has no understanding. And indeed, their lack of response to you is always a constant heedlessness, just as you would say to one who wrote a book that is entirely corrupt: you are knowledgeable, but you were just drowsy - and similar to this.
