Commentary
And when what was mentioned of the distance from faith, along with the presentation of admonitions, lessons, and signs, almost comforts the listener from the faith of those being called, it brings him closer as a sign of His might and wisdom by reminding of faith those who are higher than them in arrogance, more severe in aversion, farther in response, and more hidden in person. He said in response to what happened to him, blessings and peace be upon him, in presenting his noble self to the tribes and their distancing from him, especially the people of Ta'if, indicating the completeness of ability as a glad tidings for the one revealed to, blessings and peace be upon him, and a reprimand for those who delayed in responding to him from his people, adding to what you can infer: Remember these reports: 'And when' meaning: and remember when 'We turned towards you' meaning: We directed a pure, good, and precise direction towards you, inclining towards you and turning away from others, in the valley of the palm tree when you departed from Ta'if after you presented your noble self to them following the death of the supporters, and they rejected you with a rejection that almost caused the bitterest of pains to split open, and the eyes were drawn away from remembering him.
And when the entreaty of one who is created to be repelled and the manifestation of one who is built to be hidden is greater in the blessing, he expressed what indicates that by saying: ﴿a group﴾, which is a name that is applied to less than ten, and this is what is meant here. It is applied to all people, and the good expression in it is that these, when they were honored with the virtue of precedence and the goodness of following, were as if they were the group and no one else. ﴿from the jinn﴾ from the people of Nusaybin from the direction from which 'Addas came to you in Ta'if, by what he testified for his two masters 'Utbah and Shaybah, that you are the best of the people of the earth. Although these people of the group have nothing in their nature except repulsion and hiding, we made them affectionate towards you, appearing before you, so that you may convey to them what We have sent you with; for indeed, We have sent you to all of creation. And this is a support for you and a glad tidings of the faith of the repelled from mankind, just as We supported you from them after the repulsion of the people of Ta'if with 'Addas. Then he described them by saying: ﴿they listen to the Qur'an﴾, meaning: they seek to hear the reminder that encompasses all good, distinguishing between every misleading. And you are in the Fajr prayer in a palm tree, praying with your companions. And it indicated (p-179) the closeness of the time of attendance from the time of their presence by His saying, glorified and exalted is He, detailing their condition: ﴿So when they attended it﴾, meaning: they were in a position to hear it. ﴿They said﴾, meaning: some of them said and the others agreed: ﴿Be silent﴾, meaning: be quiet and incline with all of yourselves and listen, preserving etiquette in the presence of service. And in it is an etiquette with knowledge in learning it and also with its teacher. Al-Qushayri said: The people of attendance have the description of being subdued, calm, awe-inspiring, and dignified. And agitation and disturbance indicate a lack of attentiveness or a deficiency in awareness. And it indicated that what they listened to was easy and its time was short. And regarding the detail of their condition after its conclusion with the letter ف in His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿So when﴾, meaning: they listened when ﴿it was concluded﴾, meaning: the completion of its recitation, which indicates its greatness from any reader it was. ﴿They turned away﴾, meaning: they took the turn - that is, the closeness - by directing their faces, intentions, and resolutions ﴿to their people﴾, in whom there is strength to carry out what they attempt. And it indicated their good acceptance of what they heard and their firm belief in it by His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿warning﴾, meaning: warning them and cautioning them about the consequences of misguidance by a command from the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him. Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, made them messengers to their people.
