Commentary
And when they had made their state regarding the partners that they are the cause of connection between them and the differences, and they claimed that they intercede for them, bringing them closer to Allah in nearness and preventing them from punishment in the Hereafter, the least of matters was the equality between him and the punishment of this world. This was caused by his news about the destruction of past nations, his saying, presenting the reason that they made the focus of their consideration, denying it and reproaching them: "So why not" meaning: "Is there not, and why not" "help them" meaning: "these doomed ones" "those who took" meaning: "they exerted themselves to divert their souls from the calls of reason and the original nature until they took, and he indicated the lack of their intellect by stating their lowliness and said: "besides Allah" meaning: "the King who is greater than every great one" "as a means of nearness" meaning: "for the sake of great closeness, they draw near to it and claim that it brings them closer to Allah" "gods" they associated them with the greatest King for that - may Allah fight them and disgrace them.
And when the specification implies that they did not help them, he turned away from it and said: "But they have gone astray" meaning: "they have become absent and blind to the straight path and distanced themselves" "from them" at the time of the descent of the wrath and the occurrence of the punishment, physically and meaningfully. And when the estimation was: "So that is the taking which their very low intellects led them to, far from correctness," this was the means leading to their outcome, he added to it his saying: "And that" meaning: "the far deviation from the right path that resulted from this story from the contradiction of what they used to say: that their idols are gods, and that they harm and benefit and bring them closer to Allah and intercede for them with Him" "their falsehood" meaning: "diverting matters from their face to their backs," and it may be that the reference is to the punishment, meaning: "and this punishment is their recompense in exchange for their falsehood" "and what they were" meaning: "in the state of permanence for it being in their nature" "fabricating" meaning: "they deliberately lie; for their persistence on it after the coming of the signs can only be for that; for whoever looks into it, freeing himself from desires, will be guided.
