Commentary
And when the apparent meaning in this surah is the warning, as its beginning testifies, he mentioned some of what the criminals will be reproached with on the Day of Resurrection, which they used to deny. On that day, there will be the fulfillment of the recompense for deeds. He added to what he intended by saying: Mention this to them, perhaps they will be ashamed to be among the wrongdoers and instead be among the doers of good: "And the Day" means: and mention to them the Day they will be presented - this was the original, but he made evident the description that necessitated for them the recompense, indicating that the matter was clear to them, yet they concealed the lights of their intellects. He said: "Those who disbelieved will be presented" meaning: from the two mentioned groups "to the Fire" meaning: they will be made to taste its flames and will be turned in it as meat is presented when it is grilled, being told in a manner of arrangement, reprimand, and rebuke: because they did not remember Allah as He should be remembered at the time of their desires, rather they attained them while opposing His command, glorified and exalted is He. "You have wasted" in the reading of Nafi and Abu Amr and the Kufans with the indication, and the reading of the others with the interrogative for the increase of denial and rebuke "your good things" meaning: your pleasures by following your desires "in your life" and He repelled from it by His saying, the Most High: "the worldly life" meaning: the near, lowly life, which its description is a warning for those who understand about another life after it. So your striving in your movements and stillness was for its sake until you attained it "and you enjoyed" meaning: you sought and found your benefit "from it" and you made it the ultimate goal of your fortune in your elevation and blessings.
And when that was a belittlement of the commands and prohibitions due to the disdain for the Day of Recompense, it caused His saying, the Most High: "So today you will be recompensed" meaning: for your turning away from Us with the recompense of one whose recompense you cannot escape from in any easier matter than it "the punishment of disgrace" meaning: the great humiliation that is severe and in which there is dishonor and disgrace "for what you were" by nature and disposition "arrogant" meaning: you sought to elevate yourselves and you found it continuously "in the earth" which is due to being dust and destined for destruction and ruin, the most deserving of humility and disgrace. And when arrogance is truly for the oppressors, it would be praiseworthy, He qualified it by saying: "without right" meaning: the matter that corresponds to reality, which are Our commands and prohibitions, and He indicated with the tool of perfection that He does not punish for arrogance with a doubt "and for what you were" continuously "rebelling" meaning: you renewed your departure from the realm of obedience which the original nature and intellect call to, towards the inclinations of sins.
