Commentary
And when He divided them in the deeds, He gathered them in justice and preference and said: ﴿And for everyone﴾ meaning: from the two groups of the happy and the wretched from the two tribes: the jinn and mankind, in this world and the Hereafter ﴿are degrees﴾ meaning: ranks; that is, positions and levels in which they differ based on "what" they have done or from the essence and type of the good and bad deeds. And when the estimation is: to make it clear that He, glorified and exalted is He, acts by choice in the difference between the rational beings, and it becomes clear that there is no pause in it that the realities are not as they appeared to them in this world; for indeed, the veils of hatred and desires made things appear contrary to what they are. He referred to this with his saying in the reading of the Basri scholars and Asim and Hisham from Ibn Amir, with a difference from him: ﴿And He will fully pay them﴾ meaning: their Lord who preceded the acceptance of the good-doer towards Him and his supplication for him. And the reading of the others with the noon is more appropriate for the beginning of the Surah and for what it indicates of the unveiling of the veils of greatness on the Day of Judgment.
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, knows the weights of atoms and what is less than them and what is more than them, and He makes the recompense according to its measure, likeness, kind, type, and person, until the worker almost thinks that the recompense is the deed, He said: ﴿Their deeds﴾ meaning: its recompense of good and evil, paradise and hell - and this is evident, or a text that the jinn are rewarded for good as they are punished for disobedience. And the entire Surah of Ar-Rahman is an address to the two weighty ones with reward for the people of obedience and punishment for the people of disobedience from each of the two tribes; as will be explained, if Allah, the Exalted, wills. And the obedient among them will be rewarded with reward as the disobedient among them will be punished - this was said by Malik, Ibn Abi Layla, Al-Dhahhak, and others as reported by Al-Baghawi.
﴿And they﴾ meaning: while they ﴿are not wronged﴾ meaning: nothing of injustice is renewed for them, as there is no injustice in the recompense of their deeds with an increase in punishment or a decrease in reward. Rather, the mercy is as it was for them in this world, so it is for them in the Hereafter. Your Lord does not wrong anyone by punishing him beyond what he deserves of punishment, or by reducing what he deserves of reward.
