Commentary
(p-118) Surah Al-Ahqaf
Its purpose is to warn the disbelievers by indicating the truth of the promise regarding the Day of Resurrection, which is necessary for honor and wisdom. It reveals both of them in the most complete manner by what has occurred, the truth in the promise of the destruction of the deniers, which contradicts the state of their lands. And nothing prevents any of that; for the doer of that has no partner, so He is the one deserving of being singled out in worship. This is indicated by its name, Al-Ahqaf, which signifies the calmness of the wind and the stillness of the atmosphere, as indicated by the story of the people of Hud, blessings and peace be upon him, regarding monotheism and their warning of punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and their destruction, and that what they worshiped did not avail them. It is not correct to name it after Hud, nor to name Hud after Al-Ahqaf, for the reasons mentioned regarding the purpose of each of them. 'In the name of Allah,' who does not humiliate those who ally with Him nor honor those who oppose Him, 'the Most Gracious,' whose mercy precedes His anger with warnings of admonition, 'the Most Merciful,' who specifically grants His party the deeds of the righteous for success in the abode of permanence by entering Paradise and being saved from the Fire.
* *﴿Ha-Mim﴾ The wisdom of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, which is the ultimate in correctness and soundness, is established by the One whose power encompasses all; He does not break the promise.
