Commentary
And when he mentioned these great verses, and all of them share in greatness, after he pointed to the difference in their ranks in concealment and clarity with their pauses, he said, indicating their high ranks with the tool of distance: ﴿Those﴾ meaning: the great verses ﴿are the verses of Allah﴾ meaning: the signs that encompass the attributes of perfection, of which nothing is clearer, more evident, or more obvious than them. And when it was as if it was said: What is it? He said: Or could it be meant: We refer to them while we ﴿recite them﴾ meaning: we follow their narrative ﴿to you﴾ whether they are seen or heard, being adorned ﴿with the truth﴾ meaning: the established matter that cannot be changed, for it is neither magic nor falsehood. This then caused their denial of him and of those who seek their response to the suggestions, hoping for their faith in His saying, the Exalted: ﴿So in what statement﴾ meaning: in what great truthful news that they renew their knowledge of, is it worthy to be spoken of? And it encompasses every statement, so he said: ﴿After Allah﴾ meaning: the greatest statement about the Most High King ﴿and His verses﴾ meaning: and the statement about His great signs ﴿they believe﴾ those addressed - and they are the majority - rejected it in response to His saying: 'And in your creation' which is the strongest rebuke. And others, such as Abu Amr and Hafs from (p-69) Asim and Rawh from Ya'qub, saw that this address was directed to the address of the Prophet ﷺ in His saying: ﴿We recite them to you with the truth﴾.
