Commentary
And when he mentioned the context and what He created for its sake from the people, he included some of what He created for their sake [for their honor] in life. He followed it with what He deposited in the context from the means for the sake of living, and he said: ﴿And the alternation of night and day﴾ by the departure of one of them and the existence of the other after its departure in succession, a repeated sign for the indication of the ability to create after annihilation by resurrection and others. And he connected 'the alternation' with the estimation of 'in', so the conjunction replaces a single agent for the beginning according to the one who raised 'signs', and it replaces 'indeed' according to the one who lowered, so it is not necessary for its replacement to be that of two differing agents in the beginning in the raising and in 'indeed' in the lowering.
And when the rain was more indicative than what preceded it regarding resurrection and honor, because the less familiar something is, the more it is possible for contemplation upon it, he gave it precedence and said: ﴿And what Allah has sent down﴾ meaning: that which His greatness has been completed, so His word has been fulfilled. And when the sending down may be used for what comes from a high moral standing even if it is not physical, he clarified that what is meant here are the two matters, and he said: ﴿From the heaven﴾.
And when the benefits of the heaven are not limited to water, he said: ﴿From provision﴾ meaning: rain and other means that prepare for the emergence of provision ﴿And He revives﴾ meaning: by it and its succession ﴿the earth﴾ meaning: the one suitable for life. And for this reason, he said: ﴿After its death﴾ meaning: its dryness and the crumbling of what was in it from the plants and its transformation by mixing with its soil into soil, so when water descends upon it, it gathers it from it and brings it forth as it was upon it whenever its descent is renewed. And for this reason, he did not bring the preposition to indicate the continuity of life by strength if it were not by action.
And when he mentioned [what includes water, he mentioned] the cause of the clouds that carry it, he said: ﴿And the alternation of the winds﴾ in every direction of the universe and in every meaning of mercy and punishment and other than that from the means. And he did not mention the ships and the clouds as in Al-Baqarah due to the necessity of the essence called the 'Hawameem', that is because they are among the benefits of the alternation. And the unification of Hamzah and Al-Kisai is more eloquent because the alternation of a single thing in many aspects is more astonishing. ﴿Signs﴾ the reading of the raising is more eloquent for its indication of the lack of need for confirmation to the extent that what is in the verse is apparent in its indication of the ability and choice for the creator by what is in the alternation from the difference, and water by what occurs from it in growth is clearer in its indication than the rest regarding resurrection. And because of the intensity of its clarity, he made the matter in it dependent on the intellect and said: ﴿For a people who understand﴾. And Al-Qali said: The meaning is that the just ones when they looked at the heavens and the earth and that there must be for them a creator, they believed. And when they looked at the creation of themselves and the like, their faith increased, so they became certain. And when they looked at the rest of the events, they understood and their knowledge was established.
