Commentary
And when he mentioned their recompense for what is the truth equivalent to their deeds, according to action by action, he explained it by what is necessary upon their deeds, saying: ﴿That﴾ meaning: the great punishment ﴿is because you have taken﴾ meaning: by a burden from you for your souls and compulsion against what (p-114) reason has led to, and what the messengers have brought, and what the original natures have supported ﴿the signs of Allah﴾ meaning: the greatest King, of whom there is nothing greater ﴿as mockery﴾ meaning: you have made it a thing to be distanced from ﴿and you have been deceived﴾ due to the weakness of your minds ﴿by the worldly life﴾ meaning: the lowly one, so you preferred it for being present while you are like animals, your sight does not extend beyond the tangible, and you said: there is no life other than it, nor resurrection, nor reckoning. If you had contemplated your description of it, it would have led you to acknowledge the Hereafter.
And when he brought them to this extent of humiliation, it caused an increase in their humiliation and delight for his allies who opposed them in it and a source of mockery for them: ﴿So today﴾ after their being sheltered in it ﴿they will not be brought out﴾ by any means ﴿from it﴾ because Allah does not bring them out, nor can anyone else do that ﴿and they﴾ specifically ﴿will not be asked for their excuses﴾ meaning: it will not be requested from them what would require an excuse, which is the apology that would establish for them a valid excuse and remove from them the blame that necessitates anger by an action of good deeds, for they are in the abode of recompense, not the abode of action.
