Commentary

Indeed, in the Hamim surahs - as narrated by Abu Ubaidah in the Book of Virtues from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them - is the essence of the Qur'an. He omitted what was mentioned in Al-Baqarah from His saying 'created' so that what is here would be more comprehensive. He said: 'the heavens' meaning: their essence with what they have of indication (p-61) of their Creator and Maker, with what is in them of lessons, with what is in them of benefits, and the greatness of the creation with what they have of the celestial bodies indicating their multiplicity with what is in them of stars. 'And the earth' likewise [and] with what it contains of minerals, livelihoods, springs, and aids. 'For signs' meaning: indications of His Oneness and all of His Perfections; for it is known that there must be a Creator who possesses these attributes for each of that. 'For the believers' meaning: because they, with their firm grounding in this noble description, are worthy of reflection, for their Lord guides them through their faith. Thus, the signs of Lordship are evident to them, and the evidence of Divinity in them is clear. And perhaps He indicated by the expression of the description that there must be a precedence of faith in refuting the doubts of the people of nature, and that whoever is not firmly grounded in faith will not be free from their doubts.

Following that, [the Exalted] alerted His Prophet and the believers to what He had set forth of the signs other than it, which the one who turns away from considering them or some of them merely follows his desire. And who is more misguided than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? So He, the Exalted, said after swearing by the clear Book: 'Indeed, in the heavens and the earth are signs for the believers.' Meaning: If you, O Muhammad, do not bring them with the great sign of the Book, then for them in what We have set forth of evidence is the greatest proof and the greatest clarification. 'Do they not reflect upon themselves? Allah created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for an appointed term.' [Ar-Rum: 8] So when He alerted them to the creation of the heavens and the earth, He followed with mentioning what He spread in the earth, saying:
