Commentary

(p-100) And when this was from their saying, it was astonishing. It increased their astonishment regarding their state when they heard the decisive proofs. So he said, adding to 'they said': ﴿And when Our verses are recited﴾ meaning: they are followed in reading from any reciter, ﴿upon them are Our verses﴾ meaning: regarding what they have of greatness in itself and in relation to us while it is ﴿clear proofs﴾ meaning: in the utmost capacity in indicating resurrection, so there is no excuse for them in rejecting it. ﴿What was﴾ meaning: in any way of the universe, ﴿their proof﴾ meaning: their saying which they presented as a proof, and it does not deserve to be called a doubt. ﴿Except that they said﴾ a blameworthy saying and they did not consider its origin. ﴿Bring﴾ O reciters of the clear proofs from the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - and his followers who were guided by his guidance, ﴿with our forefathers﴾ the dead. The essence of this is that they had no proof except that they came with a statement meaning: we have no proof because there is no doubt in it, let alone a proof. And their calling themselves ignorant was not enough until they presented to the people of the clear proofs with lies, so they said: ﴿If you are truthful﴾ meaning: deeply rooted in being among the people of truth who are firmly established in it, that He, glorified and exalted is He, will resurrect the creation after their death. And that was a rejection from them of the ability to gather the body after it has decayed, while they acknowledge that He is the One who created that body initially. And it is known with certainty that whoever is capable of bringing something into existence from nothing is capable of returning it in the first way.
