Commentary
And when the meaning of this is that He, glorified and exalted is He, made the Children of Israel upon a Shari'ah and threatened them regarding the disagreement in it, then their threat is a threat to us. He stated clearly what the context of the speech necessitated and other threats to us, alerting to the superiority of our Shari'ah: ﴿Then﴾ meaning: after a period from His messengers and surpassing many high ranks above their Shari'ah ﴿We made you﴾ meaning: by Our greatness ﴿upon a Shari'ah﴾ meaning: a wide, great, clear, straight, easy way that leads to the intended goal, it is worthy that people begin to engage in it and mix with it starting from ﴿the matter﴾ which is Our revelation and is the life of souls just as the souls are the life of bodies.
And when He clarified by this statement some of its virtue over what was before it, He caused from it His saying, directing the address to the Imam regarding what he intended for the followers to be more encouraging for their striving, for their matter is a duty and the matter of their Imam is creation: ﴿So follow it﴾ meaning: with all your effort. And when the Shari'ah is the preserved intellect which Allah informed that by it He takes and by it He gives, then turning away from it to others is merely desire. And when the majority of the Ummah are not infallible, He indicated to the pardon for their slips by His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿And do not follow﴾ meaning: do not intentionally follow ﴿the desires of those who do not know﴾ meaning: they have no knowledge or they have knowledge but they act like those who have no knowledge at all, from the disbelievers of the Arabs and others. For whoever intentionally follows them, I will do to them what I did to the Children of Israel, where I cursed them by the tongue of Dawud and 'Isa son of Maryam, blessings and peace be upon them, after I had cursed them by the tongue of Musa, blessings and peace be upon him.
