And We gave them, along with that, clear signs of the matter revealed to their prophets, consisting of decisive evidence, rulings, and admonitions supported by miracles. This included the attributes of the prophets who would come after them, and other matters that are extremely clear to those whom We have decreed happiness for. This matter necessitates unity and gathering, and they were in agreement while in the time of misguidance, differing only in a minor way that does not harm nor is considered a difference.

And when their state after this giving was general, He detailed it by saying: "So they did not differ," meaning: they caused the difference and division to the utmost of their effort. And since their difference did not encompass all the time after the giving, He affirmed the connection by saying: "Except after knowledge had come to them," which is of the nature to gather on what is known. Thus, what was the cause of their gathering became a cause for their division because Allah, glorified and exalted is He, willed that, and He is Almighty.

And when this was astonishing, He clarified its reason, warning against similar matters by saying: "Out of envy," meaning: for exceeding the limits that were necessitated for them by seeking leadership, envy, and other shortcomings of the souls. And since oppression against the distant is blameworthy, He increased the astonishment by saying: "Between them," occurring among them, not extending to others. They had previously been under the control of the Copts in complete agreement and unity of opinion on accepting humiliation. Therefore, He began His saying that was necessitated by the situation regarding what the servants observe of the actions of kings towards those who oppose their commands, emphasizing for the sake of their denial: "Indeed, your Lord," meaning: the One who is kind to you by sending you and increasing your nation and protecting them from what the earlier generations went astray by, and clarifying the Day of Judgment, which is the place of wisdom, a clarification that was not made clear by the tongue of anyone from those who preceded: "Will judge between them," by accounting for deeds and recompense for them, because this is necessitated by wisdom and might on the Day of Resurrection, which your people deny, those whom We have honored with your message, even though it is permissible in wisdom to deny it. "In what they were differing," meaning: by what is for them like their nature, "In it they differ," to the utmost of their effort, intentionally for it, contrary to what would occur from them by mistake, for it is permissible in wisdom for Him to bestow upon them by pardoning it; for He knows that it is not permissible in wisdom at all to leave the differing ones without a judgment between them, because this is not acceptable to the least of kings, for the king is not known except by might and honor, and his being known as wise is only by justice. And if this is not acceptable to a king, how would it be acceptable to the King of kings? And if this judgment is necessitated by wisdom, there is no difference in it between people, so it necessitates judgment between you as well. And to emphasize the promise of that day, it is expressed by the name of the Lord, added to him, blessings and peace be upon him.
