Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, encouraged and warned, and it was established that there must be recompense, He increased in [encouragement and] warning by stating that benefit and harm do not go beyond them. He said, explaining the recompense: ﴿Whoever does a righteous deed﴾ whether few or many ﴿for himself﴾ meaning: the specific nature of his deed, he will see its recompense in this world or in the Hereafter. ﴿And whoever does wrong﴾ meaning: likewise, wrongdoing whether little or much ﴿upon it﴾ the specific nature of his wrongdoing likewise. This is in the utmost clarity, for it is not reasonable for a wise king to leave his servants without recompense, especially if he is wise. Even if the deficiencies of souls have covered many minds, and among his recompense is that he gives the wrongdoer a chance over the doer of good for a slip that has occurred to him, so that he may reconsider his state with repentance.
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, is capable and nothing escapes Him, He was in a position where He does not hasten, so He delayed the recompense until the promised day: ﴿Then﴾ meaning: after the trial of being given respite in this world and being held in the Barzakh ﴿to your Lord﴾ meaning: the sole owner of you, not to anyone else ﴿you will be returned﴾.
