Commentary
And when he informed about whom has turned away from the signs with what is the greatest admonition and the most deterrent from misguidance, he said, indicating what he began with in the recited text, which is from this: ﴿This﴾ meaning: the recitation that is recited upon you ﴿is guidance﴾ meaning: truly great and profound in guidance, complete in it. So those who have been guided by the signs of their Lord [because they] were not deceived by the present, as it is transient, they used their intellects and believed in it; for them is an everlasting bliss. ﴿And those who disbelieve﴾ meaning: they concealed what their intellects indicated to them regarding it - this was the original state, but he pointed out that every sentence from his sentences, indeed every word from his words, has a clear indication of Him, glorified and exalted is He. So he said: ﴿By the signs of their Lord﴾ meaning: and this concealment is due to the denial of the signs indicating the Oneness of the Benefactor towards them, so they have strayed from the path due to their negligence in contemplation because of their delusion with the transient present. ﴿For them is a punishment﴾ that is existing ﴿from a wretchedness﴾ [meaning: a severe punishment] that is very intense, of great turmoil and disturbance, with continuous movements. Al-Qazzaz said: the wretchedness and the filth are one. ﴿Painful﴾ meaning: of intense pain. The verse is from the intertwining: it mentioned guidance first as a proof against misguidance second, and disbelief and punishment second as a proof against their opposites first. And its secret is that he mentioned the cause of happiness to encourage towards it, and the cause of misery to deter from it.
