Commentary
[Behind him] and whenever they saw a person in a state of complete control over him, he said, clarifying the punishment: ﴿Hell﴾ meaning: it will take them without a doubt while they are in a state of complete heedlessness of it due to their neglect in taking precautions against it. The expression 'behind' is well-suited as the speech is about the liar, which is the turning of matters away from their faces to their backs. Thus, he is always moving behind him, so he is moving towards the Fire with his back. 'Behind' is also used in reference to the leader, and at that time it would be metaphorical for encompassing, meaning it will take them from the direction they are aware of and the direction they are ignorant of. So it will meet them with the utmost severity, frowning, anger, and hatred, contrary to what they were upon when they were [aware] of the visible and audible signs of mockery that accompany laughter and swaying in arrogance and excess, and similar to what they were upon when they encountered those who affirmed those signs. [And] when they were showing reliance on what they had in their hands of the perishable pleasures, he said: ﴿And it will not avail them﴾ meaning: in repelling that ﴿what they have earned﴾ meaning: what they have obtained from matters that brought them the honor that led them to mockery ﴿anything﴾ meaning: of benefit. And when these people, due to their blindness, claim that their deities will avail them, he stated explicitly: ﴿And not what they have taken﴾ meaning: they burdened themselves with taking it, opposing what their original sound nature called them to, which was to distance themselves from it. And when their disbelief is indeed polytheism, they would say: 'Allah' also, he expressed in a way that conveys the lowliness of what is besides Him: ﴿Besides Allah﴾ meaning: of a lower rank than the rank of the greatest King ﴿Allies﴾ meaning: they hope that they will do with them what a close one does in terms of benefit, protection, and repelling. ﴿And for them﴾ along with His punishment, with the disappointment of the matter ﴿is a great punishment﴾ that does not leave any direction of theirs, nor any time of theirs, nor any part of their bodies except that it fills it.
