Commentary
And when most of them were in denial of what was necessitated by the decisive proof and the clear, overpowering authority, out of stubbornness and obstinacy, even though their inner state was otherwise, (p-12) his action was like that of the doubter who plays. The estimation was for the sake of what appears [from their condition]: but you are not certain with knowledge from the sciences, upon which he based his words while turning away to the unseen, indicating his anger, and that they are deserving of immediate punishment: ﴿Rather, they﴾ that is: with their inner selves ﴿are in doubt﴾ because they do not strip themselves of the impurities that hinder the clarity of knowledge. Then he informed his Prophet ﷺ that what occupies them from this important matter is the state of children along with their claim of perfection in the morals of the noble men. [He said]: ﴿They play﴾ that is: they always act like one who neglects what is in it of the utmost seriousness, which there is no doubt about, to the play that has no benefit in it and no fruit [for it] in any way after the action of the doubter with turning away and not hastening to belief and affirmation.
