Commentary
And when the context is for the righteous, it might be thought that what has been done for them is a right that they must have and cannot avoid. He clarified that the matter is not so, and that He, glorified and exalted is He, if He had taken them and not dealt with them with His grace and pardon, they would have perished. So He said: ﴿As a favor﴾ meaning: He did that for them for the sake of favor. And for this reason, He turned away from the manifestation of greatness and said, exalted is He: ﴿From your Lord﴾ meaning: the One who is gracious to you with the perfection of His grace towards your following Him with a grace that befits you. Al-Razi said in the Luminaries: The essence of faith is the perception of favor in all circumstances. And when He, exalted is He, magnified Him by manifesting this attribute added to him ﷺ, He increased in His magnification by indicating with the tool of distance and said: ﴿That﴾ meaning: the great and vast favor ﴾is﴾ specifically ﴿the victory﴾ meaning: the attainment of all demands ﴾the great﴾ which has not left any aspect of honor except that it has filled it.
