Commentary
And when he mentioned safety, and the greatest fear that the people of this world have is death, he said: "They will not taste therein" meaning: in Paradise "death" meaning: it will not be renewed for them the beginnings of its taste, so how about what is beyond that. And since the intention was to negate that in a manner that would result in certainty of safety in the highest manner, and since the exception is the criterion of generality, and it is known that what was in this world of tasting death, which is a meaning of meanings, has become impossible to return to, he said, explaining and commenting on this impossibility: "except for the death". And since the meaning, with ascribing the tasting to it, does not confuse, for what is before the blowing of the soul is not tasted, he expressed it by saying: "the first". And it has been understood that the restriction by the circumstance indicates that in the Fire, death is tasted therein, and the description of the first indicates that the tasted is a second death. So it was as if it was said: But the disbelievers among those who were sinful will enter the Fire and taste therein another death - as has come in the authentic hadiths. And it is permissible that the description of the pious is broader than that of the steadfast and others, so the ruling would be on the whole, meaning that all will not taste, and some of them - those whom Allah wills from the sinners - will taste it in another place, which is the Fire. And it is permissible that the first death was in the metaphorical Paradise, so it would not be a connection to an impossibility, and that is because the pious has always (p-51) been in it in this world metaphorically due to what he has from the cause and by what has preceded of Allah's decree for him therein. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The believer, when he visits his brother, remains in the garden of Paradise until he returns." It was said: And what is the garden of Paradise? He said: "Its shade." "And when you pass by the gardens of Paradise, then graze therein." And likewise, the one who is decreed what is in it at the time of death and after it due to what he has from the enjoyment of looking and similar things from the food for the martyrs and other than that from what has been reported in the authentic news. Among that is what Al-Bukhari narrated from Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, that his uncle Al-Nadr, may Allah be pleased with him, said on the day of Uhud: O Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, by the Lord of Al-Nadr, I find its scent from beyond Uhud. Then he fought until he was killed. Then the completion of that bliss in Paradise will be after the resurrection. Ibn Burjan said: This world, when it is realized in the case of the believing pious and he follows the gaze in it, is indeed a small Paradise due to His, glorified and exalted is He, taking care of them in it and His proximity to them and His looking at them and their remembrance of Him and their worship of Him and their engagement with Him, and He is with them wherever they may be.
And when the context was for the pious, he said: ﴿And He protected them﴾ meaning: the totality of the pious in the recompense for what they have avoided ﴿the punishment of Hell﴾ meaning: that which the sinful had previously been subjected to. As for those who are not pious among the sinners, Allah will admit whom He wills of them to the Fire, and He will excuse each one of them according to the extent of their sins. Then He will cause them to die [in it] and they will remain until Allah permits intercession for them, and He will bring them out. Then He will revive them with what the people of Paradise sprinkle upon them from the water of life. Imam Ahmad narrated in his Musnad, and Muslim in the Book of Faith from his Sahih, and Ibn Hibban in the Book of Intercession from his Sunnah, and Al-Darimi in the Description of Paradise and Hell from his well-known Sunnah in the Musnad, and Ibn Abi Hatim in his Tafsir from Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "As for the people of the Fire who are its people" - and Al-Darimi said: those who are for the Fire - "Indeed, they will neither die in it nor live, but there are some among you who have been touched by the Fire due to their sins," - or he said: "due to their transgressions - so Allah caused them to die a death." And Al-Darimi said: "Then He will cause them to die a death." And Al-Darimi said: "Indeed, the Fire touches them according to the extent of their sins, and they will be burned in it until when they become charcoal, permission will be granted for intercession, and they will be brought forth." [And Al-Darimi said]: "Then they will come out of the Fire as bundles, and they will grow by the rivers of Paradise. Then it will be said: O people of Paradise, pour upon them, and they will grow," and Al-Darimi said: "Their flesh will grow like the growth of a seed in the flow of water." The bundles, Abd Al-Ghafir Al-Farisi said in Majma' Al-Raghayb: (p-53) the plural of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: dhabara] like [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: imarah] is the gatherings of people. Abu Ya'la narrated from Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, who said: "Some people will enter the Fire until when they become charcoal, they will be admitted to Paradise, and the people of Paradise will say: Who are these? It will be said: These are the people of Hell." And for Ahmad ibn Mani' from Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, [from the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him] he said: "The bridge will be placed" and he mentioned the intercession of the believers for their brothers after crossing the bridge and Allah's permission for them to bring them out. [He said]: "Then they will bring them out from it and throw them into the water of life, and they will grow [like] the growth of crops in [the flow of] water," and for Ibn Abi Umar from Ubaid ibn Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Allah will bring forth a people from the Fire after they have been burned in it and have become charcoal, and they will be thrown into a river at the gate of Paradise called the River of Life, and they will grow in it like a seed grows in the flow of water - or like the growth of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: thaarir] - and they will enter Paradise, and it will be said: These are the freed ones of the Most Merciful." [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: thaarir] - with the three dots and the 'ain and the two silent 'ra's: a plant like [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: hilyoon]. And Al-Tirmidhi narrated - and he said: It is good and authentic - and it was narrated from different chains from Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: (p-54) "Some people from the people of monotheism will be punished in the Fire until they become molten in it, then mercy will reach them [and they will be brought out] and they will be thrown at the gates of Paradise, and the people of Paradise will sprinkle water upon them, and they will grow like the growth of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: ghuthaa] in the flow of water, then they will be admitted to Paradise."
