Commentary
And when it indicated that this is said for each of the sins and is acted upon in its severity, it indicated what they are encompassed by. So he said, affirming in response to their denial, leading them in a way that makes it clear that it is the cause of what was mentioned of their punishment: "Indeed, this" meaning: the punishment, in saying, action, and state, "is what you were" meaning: by nature and disposition, we have created you upon it so that our power may manifest in your affairs, in this world and the Hereafter. "By which you doubt" meaning: you engage yourselves and carry them towards doubt in it and you turn them away from what they have of the original nature of believing in the possible, especially for those who have experienced its truthfulness and the extraordinary events that appeared through him, to the extent that you were, due to your intense denial of him, as if you were specifically attributing doubt to him.
