Commentary
And when it became known that he does not possess anything of his own affairs, but has reached the utmost humiliation, this was indicated by his mocking of what he presumed in himself of the greatness by which he elevates himself in this world over the commands of Allah. It was said, based on what you estimate: he will be told, 'Taste,' meaning: this has led you to it, your deception regarding the allies of Allah. And when the allies of Allah, from the messengers and their followers, inform in this world that he - due to his refusal of the command of Allah - is the humiliated one, and this sinful one and his followers deny that and affirm their words that imply his greatness by burning the hearts of the allies, he was informed of their saying as they used to utter it, adding to his torment with reproach and scolding, justifying the command to taste: 'Indeed, you,' and he emphasized with his saying: 'You alone,' without those who inform of your lowliness. 'The Mighty,' meaning: the one who prevails and is not prevailed upon. 'The Generous,' meaning: the one who combines nobility of soul and great refusal. So, it will not benefit you to conceal the faults of your morals by displaying your virtues, for you are not a mean one, meaning: a stingy, lowly person with a despicable refusal. This is a metaphor for addressing him with baseness while establishing proof of that with what he is in of destruction. And the reading of Al-Kisai with the opening of 'that' indicates this punishment in word and deed, as it was said to him of this in the world, and he believes it to be true.
