Commentary
And when it was as if it was said: What is the matter with the sinful one eating this food, and what compels him to it and to approaching its place? It was answered that he is overpowered by it. The attribute of might in it necessitates mercy for his return, by saying to the keepers of Hell: "Seize him," meaning: a seizing of overpowering, so do not allow him to have any control over his affair. "Then drag him," meaning: drag him with overpowering, harshness, and speed to punishment and humiliation, such that he is as if he is being carried. Al-Razi said in Al-Lawa'ih: And 'atlal' is to take hold of the collar of his garment at his chest and drag him. The reading with the dhamma is more indicative of the extremity of harshness and severity than the reading with the kasra. "To the middle of the Hellfire," meaning: the fire which is in the utmost of blazing and burning, and it is the place from which the tree that is his food emerges.
