Commentary
And when the estimation is for the evidence of the recompense, the essence of which is the guarantee of all its aspects on the Day of Resurrection: We have not created mankind in vain, some of them seeking to overpower others, then they are not held accountable. He added to it something greater in appearance than it, saying: ﴿And We did not create the heavens﴾, meaning: despite their greatness and the vastness of each one of them and their encompassing what is beneath them. And He gathered them because the more the work increases, the further it is from being in vain, while the perception of their multiplicity requires observation of what is in them from the stars. And He unified in Surah Al-Anbiya' specifically what the deniers of resurrection will witness regarding what was mentioned there from the specification of 'with Us' concerning what is hidden.
And when the evidence for the conformity of the lands is precise, He unified them, saying: ﴿And the earth﴾, meaning: for what is in it of benefits ﴿and what is between them﴾, meaning: the two types and between each one of them [and what] follows it ﴿playing﴾, meaning: regarding what we have of the greatness that is recognized by anyone with the slightest intellect, which elevates it above play, because it is only done by one who is deficient. And if we left people to overpower one another as you see, then we do not take the right of the weak from the strong, it would have been that our creation for them was play, rather play is lighter than that. And we would not have been deserving of the attribute of sanctity based on that estimation, for indeed: 'No nation is sanctified that does not take the right of its weak from its strong without hesitation.' Narrated by Ibn Majah from Abu Sa'id and Ibn Jami' in his Musnad from Jabir, and the companion of Al-Firdaws from Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with them, who elevated it. And this is something that even the least of the rulers of the world would not accept for himself. Thus, this was a decisive proof for the correctness of the gathering, so that justice and virtue may be manifested there.
