'In' means: what. And when His saying, glorified and exalted is He, has preceded: ﴿He gives life and causes death﴾ [Surah Ad-Dukhan: 8], and they know that what is meant by it is that the giving of life to the individual person is repeated. And He, glorified and exalted is He, has said: 'And you were dead, and He gave you life, then He will cause you to die, then He will give you life again, then to Him you will be returned' ﴿Surah Al-Baqarah: 28﴾, meaning: by the revival after death. And He said: ﴿You caused us to die twice and gave us life twice﴾ [Surah Ghafir: 11]. They said: ﴿It is nothing but our first death﴾, with the omission of a genitive; meaning: what is life except the life of our death, the first, which was before the blowing of the spirit - as will come in Surah Al-Jathiyah: 'It is nothing but our worldly life.' And they expressed it by death, indicating that life in comparison to the everlasting death, according to their claim, is something that fades away, having no relation to it. And He, glorified and exalted is He, presented their words in this manner, indicating that when matters are compared, the unseen to the witnessed, the giving of life after the second death is more appropriate since it follows a life than the giving of life after the first death. Thus, the matter is established that the beginning was from a death that was not preceded by a life, and the final state will be a life that is not followed by death. And when the meaning is: and there is no life after it, they emphasized it by what is understood explicitly, so they said in response to what Allah affirmed on the tongue of His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him: 'And we are not' and they confirmed the negation by saying: 'with those who are raised' meaning: from a place of resurrection, by which we will become people of voluntary movement, spreading after death. It is said: he raised him and he revived him, if he gave him life.
