Commentary

And when He informed them of His choosing, He clarified the effects of the choice and said: ﴿And We gave them﴾ meaning: due to what We have of greatness ﴿some signs﴾ meaning: the signs indicating Our greatness and Our choosing them from the time when Musa, Our servant, blessings and peace be upon him, came to Fir'aun until he departed from them by death. And after his death, through the hands of the prophets who affirm His law, blessings and peace be upon them. ﴿In it is a trial﴾ meaning: a test like it that inclines whoever sees it or hears it or refers it to other than what it was upon. And that is by the parting of the sea, the shading of the clouds, the sending down of manna and quails, and other than that from what they saw of the nine signs. And in this is a deterrent for the Arabs from some of their sayings due to the fear of being snatched away from the Arabs and the poverty of cutting off the supply from them and other than that. ﴿Clear﴾ meaning: clear to itself, clarifying for others. And how appropriate this conclusion is to His saying at the beginning of their story: ﴿And We certainly tried before them the people of Fir'aun﴾ [Al-Dukhan: 17].
