Commentary
And when Quraysh was boasting about the outward appearances of matters, from adornment and deception, and they considered it a glorification from Allah, and they regarded the weakness of their condition in this world as misery and distance from Allah, He responded to their saying with what He brought to the Children of Israel regarding what they were in of weakness and poor condition after the destruction of the family of Pharaoh by the punishment of annihilation. He said, affirming the improbability for Quraysh to choose one whose share of this world is little: "And certainly We chose them," meaning: We acted with what We have of greatness in making them a choice, like one who strives in that. Their matter was magnified by His saying, based on what you can estimate: a choice that is elevated "with knowledge," meaning: from Us regarding what will come from them of good and evil. And it has become evident from its effects that you have begun to ask them while you are the clear descendants of Ismail, blessings and peace be upon him, about what befalls you, and you make them your example in what afflicts you, and you strike towards them the backs of your camels. Thus, it will soon be that all who follow your Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, will be from you and from others. And when He clarified the favored, He clarified the one favored over him and said: "over the worlds," meaning: those existing in their time with what We revealed to them of the Book and sent to them of the messengers.
