Commentary
Indeed, by what we have of greatness, we have sent down the Book either all at once to the House of Glory in the sky of this world or we have begun to send it down to the earth in a blessed night, meaning the Night of Decree, as Ibn Abbas may Allah be pleased with him said. Or the middle of Sha'ban, and for this reason, its effects are such that the understandings in religion and this world do not encompass them. The scholar Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri said: It descends to the sky of this world every year in the measure that Gabriel, peace be upon him, used to bring it down to the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, in that year. And it is called 'blessed' because it is the night of the beginning of the connection, and the most blessed of nights is when the servant is present with his heart, witnessing his Lord, enjoying the lights of the connection, and finding in it the breeze of closeness. Al-Razi said in the Luminaries: The most blessed of nights is what is unveiled in it of the realities of things.
And when this clarifies what was hinted at by the end of that good news in the apparent warning, it explained the sending down or began what was in it of clear warning leading to the meanings necessitating the good news. So he said, confirming for the sake of their denial: Indeed, we, by what we have of greatness, have always been warning to our servants, not taking them to account without warning. For the sake of our mercy to these people, who are the softest of people by nature, the purest of hearts, and the most attentive in hearing, we connect them with what we have prepared for them from that to what no one else has reached and has not approached from the heights in morals, characteristics, and the acquisition of all virtues.
Imam Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr said: When Surah Hamim As-Sajdah and Surah Ash-Shura included the mention of the Glorious Book, which has been referred to, of that which Surah Ghafir did not encompass, and the result of all that was the informing of its revelation from Allah and its detailing, and its being an Arabic Qur'an, to what He, glorified and exalted is He, mentioned of its characteristics, up to His saying: ﴿And indeed, it is a reminder for you and your people, and you will surely be questioned﴾ [Az-Zukhruf: 44]. The speech then connected some of it with some to the end of the Surah. He, glorified and exalted is He, opened Surah Ad-Dukhan with what completes that purpose, which is the informing of the time of its descent to the (p-4) lowest heaven. He, glorified and exalted is He, said: ﴿Indeed, We sent it down in a blessed night﴾. Then He mentioned its virtue, saying: ﴿In it is decreed every wise matter﴾ [Ad-Dukhan: 4]. Thus, the description of the Book with its characteristics and the informing of the time of its descent to the lowest heaven occurred. The most important of that preceded in the two Surahs before, and the informing of the time of its descent to the lowest heaven was delayed; for it is not in the emphasis like the preceding. Then, following this, there occurred a detailing of a warning that was summarized in His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿So overlook them and say, 'Peace.' Soon they will know﴾ [Az-Zukhruf: 89]. And what preceded it from His saying: ﴿Or have they devised a matter? Then indeed, We are devising﴾ [Az-Zukhruf: 79], and His saying, glorified is He: ﴿Or do they think that We do not hear their secrets and their private counsel?﴾ [Az-Zukhruf: 80]. And His glorification, glorified and exalted is He, of Himself from their great slander in making Him a partner and a son, up to the end of the Surah. Thus, He detailed some of what these verses summarized in His saying, glorified and exalted is He, at the beginning of Surah Ad-Dukhan: ﴿So wait for the Day when the heaven will bring a visible smoke﴾ [Ad-Dukhan: 10], and His saying, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿The Day We will seize with the greatest seizing﴾ [Ad-Dukhan: 16]. And the reference is to the Day of Badr. Then He mentioned the state of others in this and their destruction due to the evil they committed, so that they may feel that there is no difference if they understood and took heed. Then He hinted at their generation in His statement: "What is between its two banks is more honorable than me and more generous." Then He mentioned, glorified and exalted is He: (p-5) ﴿The tree of Zaqqum﴾ [As-Saffat: 62], up to His saying: ﴿Taste, indeed, you are the honored and noble﴾ [Ad-Dukhan: 49]. And all of this was connected in a way that dazzles the minds. Then He followed it with the mention of the state of the righteous, in accordance with the ongoing pattern of alternating between encouragement and warning, to clarify the state of the two groups and to produce clear knowledge from the two paths. Then He said to His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: ﴿Indeed, We have made it easy in your tongue, perhaps they will remember﴾ [Ad-Dukhan: 58]. And He informed him, with the matter being clear and evident, that: ﴿Only he will remember who fears﴾ [Al-A'la: 10]. Then He said: ﴿So wait﴾ [Ad-Dukhan: 10] for your promise and their warning, ﴿Indeed, they are waiting﴾ [Ad-Dukhan: 59].
