Commentary

And when the context necessitated it, it was inevitable to estimate: So Moses was commanded by Allah to take the servants of Allah, and the people of Pharaoh followed them as He, glorified and exalted is He, informed. So Allah opened the sea with His overwhelming power and held its water like walls with His overpowering greatness. He left it after their emergence from it in its state. Then the servants of the devil followed them due to the misery that overflowed upon them, and Allah drowned them with His might; not one of them escaped. He, glorified and exalted is He, expressed all of this with His saying in the context of resumption: "How many have they left behind?" meaning: those who were decreed to be drowned, so they drowned. "Of gardens" meaning: orchards that are in the utmost of what can be from the goodness of the earth, the abundance of trees, the purity of fruits and plants, and their beauty that delights the distressed and conceals worries. And it indicated the generosity of the earth with His saying: "and springs."
