Commentary
And when today is intended to be the collective favor in a ruling of the rulings, and the time of the smoke, if it is meant by it the drought that was before the Day of Badr or what is close to the hour, is called one day due to the unity of that ruling. He replaced 'the Day of Smoke' with his saying as a threat by the severing of the hearts: 'The Day We will seize' meaning: with what we have of greatness and might: the greatest seizing, which causes their bonds to dissolve and their resolves and strengths to crumble, and which their realities and desires cannot bear. Whether the seizing was on the Day of Badr or otherwise, there will lose there the one whose state of trial reveals his tyranny and his rebellion against his Lord and his disobedience. And it is permissible that this is a circumstance for 'the returning ones.' And when what He has, glorified and exalted is He, of forbearance and prolonged delay causes the people of ignorance and harshness to doubt His warning, He said, affirming: 'Indeed, We are taking vengeance' meaning: that is a fixed attribute, we will not cease to act upon it against our enemies to please their opposers among our allies.
