Commentary

And when it was as if it was said: What did they say when they realized that? It was said: They said, and the bonds of those resolutions had loosened, and the strength of every [determined person] had weakened. Those lofty aspirations had declined after their elevation, claiming that they were for the ultimate submission of the people of closeness and pleasure: "Our Lord" meaning: O Creator of us and Benefactor to us, "remove from us the punishment." Then they justified that by what they knew to be the cause of its removal, saying, affirming their state of contradiction to their news: "Indeed, we are believers," meaning: deeply rooted in the description of faith, reaching the rank of certainty. This can be intended to mean after the sun rises from its setting. Both Shaykhs narrated from Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "The Hour will not be established until the sun rises from its setting. When it rises and the people see it, they will all believe, and that will be when no soul's faith will benefit it." Then he recited the verse. And if the intended punishment was what occurred from the drought, then this faith was in the manner of a promise.
