Commentary

And when the decree is for affirming His divinity on earth by gathering: If you were to ask them who will save them in their time of distress, they would surely say: Allah. There is no action from those whom we call upon besides Him. So He said, in addition to that: "And if you were to ask them" meaning the disbelievers, "Who created them" meaning the worshippers and the worshipped together, they would respond with what indicates the blindness of the true heart that is naturally inclined to it and imprinted with the nature of divine wisdom upon it. And they did not believe in the response of someone like him by saying: "When you asked them": "They would surely say: Allah" who has all the attributes of perfection, He is the one who created everything. There is nothing from whom they call upon that belongs to Him. Therefore, He caused His saying to be: "So how" meaning how and from which direction after they affirmed for Him creation and command: "are they turned away" meaning they turn away from the realities of matters to their opposites from whatever form it may be, claiming that He has a partner sometimes by offspring, and sometimes otherwise, while what has been established in their innate nature confirms that He has no partner because to Him belongs all creation and command.
