Commentary
And when mockery of the Messenger of the King is mockery of him, and the kingdoms are established by governance through desire and fear, and by instilling awe until majesty is completed and greatness is established, it is therefore not permissible in the mind of any sane person for a king to tolerate mockery of him. The consequence of mocking the messengers is destruction, so He said: ﴿So We destroyed﴾. The original was to be implicit, but He made the pronoun explicit for clarification when it was in the earlier ones of great magnitude, turning the style of address to the third person, directing attention to His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, as a consolation for him and a warning to them. He said: ﴿Stronger than them﴾, meaning from Quraysh who mock you, ﴿in might﴾ in terms of number, strength, and endurance. What do they think of themselves when they are weaker than them if they persist in mocking the Messenger of Allah, the Most High?
And when He mentioned the destruction of those, He mentioned that their state was weaker than the state of these, so He said: ﴿And the example of the former ones has passed﴾, meaning their destruction occurred, which serves as an example to be exemplified by those after them. He also mentioned in the Qur'an the news about it, which is rightfully to be referred to as an example. Rather, He mentioned that those who worshipped Him before relied upon Him like the house of the spider. So how about the first ones themselves, and how about these? For indeed, the situation led to them being weaker than the weakest of the house of the spider. So let them wait for what will befall them, similar to what befell those, by the hands of the soldiers of Allah from among humans or angels.
