Commentary
And when He made clear His encompassing of them, the encompassing of a container by that which it contains, it was known that the fire does not cease from those who are in it except by something that reduces it, either by pouring water on it or by reducing its fuel or by other than that, which is a breaking of the norm. This is while it does not experience any decrease at all, as is known in the punishment of this world, for they are its fuel. So Allah, the Most High, said: "It will not be lightened for them," meaning He intends to weaken it with a type of weakness. Thus, the negation of lightening is a negation of slackening without contradiction. Al-Baydawi said: It is he from whom the fever has lightened - when it has settled, and the structure is for weakness.
And when the waiting for relief is something that alleviates the distressed, He negated it with His saying: "And they are in it despairing," meaning they are silent in silence of despair from salvation and relief.
