Commentary

And when eating is the most general of needs and the most general of requests, Allah, the Most High, said, clarifying that all of their eating is for enjoyment, in which there is nothing for sustenance, because there is no decay in it due to strength or otherwise, to be preserved by eating and to weaken. "For you therein is fruit," meaning what is eaten for enjoyment, even if it is meat and bread. And when what is enjoyed in this world is little, Allah, the Most High, said: "many," and with the abundance indicated the permanence of the blessing with the intention of enjoyment of everything in it by His saying: "from it," meaning not from other than it in which sustenance is observed. "You eat," so it will never be exhausted and will not be affected by the eating of the eaters, because it is like the nature of flowing water; nothing is taken from it except behind its place, like it or more than it at that moment.
