Commentary

And when he called them with what the rest of the people of the standing aspire to, because every group says: 'We are His servants,' he specified those who are intended by what discourages others. This is so that the description of piety would not be a barrier for those who heard it today from the disbelievers regarding entry, and they were not able to do that. So, He described, glorified and exalted is He, the pious with what makes reaching their rank easier than others. He said: ﴿Those who believed﴾ meaning they established this reality ﴿in Our signs﴾ whose greatness is apparent in itself first and in relation to us second. ﴿And they were﴾ meaning always with what is for them like their nature and creation ﴿submissive﴾ meaning fully obedient to the commands and prohibitions. By this, they reach the reality of complete piety.
